I picked up some new toy Dragon figures from Schleich. They're supposed to be Cold Drakes from the Arctic/Ant-Arctic regions, by factory design. Their sculpts are superb; their factory painting is very good, but it is just too blue for my liking. For AD&D White, frost breathing, Dragons, they are just too blue in color. Dragon #1: front factory paint; right factory side; left side factory paint; rear w. factory paint; front w. over-brush; 3/4 view w. over-brush applied. Dragon #2, contrasting factory paint with white over-brushing: right side, w/o over-brushed white; left side, with over-brushed white applied; top down with over-brush applied; bottom with over-brush applied. So I got out my cheap, blush make-up brush from Wal-Mart, and I applied a craft paint, Titanium White, over-brush/heavy dry-brush technique to them, pretty much everywhere. I think that they came out very well from their make-over session. Dragon #1 & #2, a mated pair? These are good sized figures, averaging $20 USD-$25 each, with a full factory paint job which is good, but they can be easily tweaked to greatly improve them for gaming. Cheers! |

Do you apply a sealer coat? Do you base them? |

Yes, I will seal these as the acrylic craft paint can rub off too easily, otherwise. Normally, I do base them -- I haven'tgotten that far with them yet. For 2e BattleSystem games, a defined base is essentially required. For RPG play, I find bases generally helpful as they make front/flank/rear determinations easy. I lean back towards AD&D's war gaming roots more than most DM's do in my approach to using figures in my AD&D games. I also like how a decorated base makes them more attractive, IMO. I base my 54mm Army Men figures, and for me, that takes their visual appearance up a few notches, all by itself. I'm a huge fan of basic decorated figure bases no matter whether I'm playing an RPG or a war game. Cheers! |
