There is a new, very interesting study on conscription in the Middle Ages. I have summarized some of the findings and will present them using the pikemen from my own late medieval army. It is planned that the book will be also released in english. Please click the link to see more pictures. English translation at the end of the german text. link

A lot of interesting information that will require thinking through. I had read once that the death of so many people in the plague resulted in the survivors all having more money. It does make sense that they would use some of the money to buy weapons and armor, resulting in a much better armed and armored force, whose members are much more likely to survive the campaign (and very pleased about that!). The plague created a "middle class" – with skilled workers being able to negotiate better terms and pay. There was also a lot of untenanted land which enabled the expansion of farms etc. Military pay had to increase in line with this expansion of civil wealth. |
