It is a little-known fact* that the Romans built ships on the Sinus Arabicus (now called the Red Sea) and sailed out into the Indian Ocean. They somehow missed India and landed in what is now known as Thailand, probably on the isthmus near modern-day Krabi. The region at that time hosted many independent city-states with common language and ancestry, and the Romans presumably saw an opportunity to divide and conquer. Situations like that presented here ensued.

*Little-known because I just made it up.
