The latest batch on the work / painting table is a unit's worth of 20mm Hinton Hunt (HH, but most are probably copies) Napoleonic French infantry in greatcoats.

Nice work all around
I have 1 division of Russian 1812 musketeers all in greatcoats.
It was a common outer wear

It's a pretty quick and easy way to get troops on the table, but it does detract from the color that we want to see on the table. I put a number of my Russians in greatcoats as well.

I have that book you used as a reference as well – a fantastic little tome. In fact I have two copies – one without the dust jacket that I use for general reference.

#79thPA – the potential speed painting was an attraction, but as all the others will br in uinform up to an including full parade dress there will be quite a bit of colour.

#Woolshed Wargamer – I have it both in print and electronically, makes it easier to print off painting guides I can handle with paint on my fingers.

I painted greatcoats for the opposite reason, to bring some variety to all my parade-ground troops.

If you do your research, you can easily distinguish one nation's greatcoats from another's – unless one side captured a lot of the other's of course…..
