So. Has anyone else encountered their mdf going mouldy and, if so, what have you successfully used to clean them up and seal them Thanks |

Are they going mouldy before you used them or after, on finished miniatures? |

Never had this yet. Been using MDF for bases since around 2000 AD. Are they subjected to high humidity? Best option is to seal them with Polyurethane, or Wood Sealer, immediately after acquisition to avoid mold. Polyurethane is the easiest to find, and it is highly recommended as MDF takes paint very poorly until it is sealed properly -- the paint tends to get sucked into the fibrous material's surface, creating a blotchy finish. To remove mold, I would suggest a mold-specific cleaner from a grocery store or big box store. Then seal with Polyurethane after the cleaning solution dries. Cheers! |

MDF is basically a compressed paper product. And since it is basically comprised of organic components, the mold is consuming the material. I think your best solution is going to re-base the figures, throw out the moldy bases and any that were in the same storage container, as they probably have already been exposed to the mold spores as well. Completely clean or replace the storage containers as they will also have the spores present. Then put the re-based figures in a new, or completely clean, container and store in a non-humid location. |
