I have four cans of army painter spray primer and all of the nozzles are clogged. I do know to hold the can upside down after spraying to clear it, but every can I have gets clogged before I use it up. Does anyone know any tips or tricks to avoid this?

I use sprays supplied by Pendraken but I expect that this applies to any make of spray.

I keep a dressing pin in the spray nozzle after use and I've never had a clogged nozzle.

You can try soaking the plastic spray nozzles in Simple Green, or Acetone/Nail Polish Remover, for several days, to see if it will dissolve the clog. If the clog is in the tube within the can, I have nothing for you.

Have you ever tried gray automotive primer from Wal-Mart? The cans are less than $10 USD each. I have only had one clog up on me, since 1993, and I've primed 1,000+ miniatures since then. Mind you, I am an army painter: simple, fast, efficient, mass painting. I would never dream of entering my work in a competition. As the Russian General said, "Numbers has a quality all its own."

I wish you the best of luck. Cheers!

I only use Rustoleum Ultra Matte primer. From Walmart. It's about $7 USD, and lasts until the can is empty.
Please go back and read my many rants against "Hobby Primers". They're just as relevant now as they were in the past.
I just wish the $.99 USD Walmart Flat White was still available.

But, go ahead and buy $14 USD cans that crap out halfway through. 🤷🙄

Agree with John

The quality of Rustoleum paints has improved tremendously in recent years, so much that the quality of their primer is better then GW and Army Painter.

They have a large selection now of colors and cost is about half the "hobby" paints. Menards also routinely puts them on sale for around $6.00 USD.

Also never had a can that clogged, and remember clogging can occur inside, not just at the nozzle.

DO NOT use Krylon spray! only use Rustoleum.

I go with automotive primer from Walmart.

That said, I have experienced the clogging issue.

Two solutions:

1) Take the semi used can back to Walmart for a replacement.

2) Use a pin vice to drill out the clog.

It could be you're not inverting the can and spraying long enough. You may be able to see the spray change from paint to propellant: that's when to stop. That said, I don't have that much recent experience using rattle cans.
