That's my possibly incorrect recollection of a Donald Featherstone phrase.

Like many of you, I was born in the twenty or so years after World War II. Our lives were greatly influenced by the stories of the War our elders told us (I thought the ruined house across the street had been destroyed during the War--no doubt as part of a German invasion of Kansas).

In addition to collecting toy soldiers, we invented and played other games based--often vaguely--on the War. What were some of these games you played?

One of ours was a winter game, involving stuffing our gloves in our caps, then throwing the caps as high as we could, and seeing how many aircrews (gloves) could escape from the doomed plane (the cap) before it crashed into the ground.

I used to play with acorns and twigs (the acorn caps made decent helmets for the sticks stuck in the ground.) Then eventually I got ahold of Airfix figs… ;-)
