I mount my 28"s on metal and store them in containers lined with magnetic sign material. I have been having trouble lately with the 20mm round washers I used. Since they are stainless steel, they don't stick very well. I have been unable to locate non-SST washers at the hardware stores.
What I should have been looking for are magnetic striker plates. These are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and thicknesses. The seller cautions about them being prone to rusting since they are non-SST. Rust is highly unlikely in my storage boxes.
There are plenty of plain metal bases out there, but no round ones!

Have you tried galvanised washers? I'm not sure how well they stick to magnets, but they're common in hardware shops here.

Are you using fender washers? That's what you want, I think.

For metal figures, I really prefer the 1-inch fenders, but for plastic, I'm fine with wood.
