Ages ago, as I was putting figures away from a FIW skirmish game, I counted how many figures were from different manufacturers. I came up with 13!
Then when I got bitten by the Plains Indians bug, I made a conscious effort to not have ANY duplicate figures. 3 different packs of Conquest Comanche was a good start. Foundry was a definite 👍 for this quest. RAFM ditto. Knuckleduster and Dixon…

This is not something to aim for if assembling the Potsdam Grenadiers, Imperial Guard, etc. But frontier skirmish gaming??? 🤔
What say you?

As long as the different makes don't appear too out of scale/place (to you) when on the table together, John, why not mix up manufacturers? If you need a troop type or pose one manufacturer doesn't offer, then you have a choice- convert or buy from another manufacturer. Besides, if you just like Brand A's figures for "Grenzer- picking their noses" better than Brand Y's "Grenzer scratching arse", and the Brand A figures look alright together with the Brand Y figures you have, why not use them together?

I frequently use different makes of figures, several ranges are quite compatible with each other!

I think Dal puts it succinctly….

Skirmish games, always. Prefer to stay around 25/28mm and for no 2 figures in the same unit to look the same.

In my modern collection the biggest deciding factor is the size of the weapon. As an example TAG M-60 is way to large to use with West Wind/Baker Company Vietnam range.

Would do this all the time – just needs to be figures of similar heights and bulk.

I'd say strive for idividuality in any sort of skirmish/RPG situation. In fact, I don't believe I have a single duplicate figure in either Rixx' or my fantasy tavern crowd, both in excess of 100 figures. Mind you, when I break out the 6mm hordes for the Seven Years War, the situation is quite different.
