I found myself wondering today about getting back into Ancients – I have 2 large 28mm Classical armies ( as well as 4 large 28mm Medieval Armies and a 17th Century Polish army) but have been out of the loop since just before lockdown. I live in London UK and do not own a vehicle so any venue I go to needs to be accesible by public transport which it seems limits my options a bit. Back in the day I used to play WAB, something which seems to anger certain folk though I never really understood quite why, Once those rules died gaming options dried up for me as none of the successor systems ( clash of Empires, War and Conquest Hail Caesar) really took off and finding players for those has been nigh on impossible. So really I need to find something which people in London play which is in 28mm. Ideally not a DBM type game ( like ADLG or FOG) or something using grids . So what games does that leave and how do I find players? I have visited Central London Gamers but its a 15mm ADLG Clique and well rather uninviting. So, am I chasing a unicorn? |

When people are keen on tennis, they go to a local court-for-hire or seek out a local club & inevitably they'll find someone to have a hit. Rules? Don't be absurd; they are universal. Your opponent will have recognisable and acceptable shoes & racquet. No problems. That's where our hobby suffers. There's so much diversity with scales, periods & rule sets it's almost a guarantee you'll have to compromise. If you're lucky. Because if the local wargames' club isn't simpatico, where do you find opponents? Our GW friends have a lot more avenues open. Historical gamers less. There could be several like-minded gamers living within a 10 minute walk, but you'd never know. So, LoD I'm thinking you may well be chasing a single horned equid. I game with 5 pals. All were met through my staging Demo games at the local Hobby Show over a 20 year period. These 5 are absolute gems but several who approached & were discarded were zircons. My advice….I do not know but if it comforts you to know this is a common problem, be comforted. |
