The song that makes you put down the brush, just listen, get a far away look, and a smile.

Paint it black just because.

Ruby Tuesday in remembrance of my old high school sweetheart, now long passed.

Nights in White Satin also in remembrance of a dancer that I would never introduce to mother.

I never liked Knights in White Satin.
HOWEVER…
My girlfriend would put that record on to "get into the mood".
I learned rather quickly to love that song.

But more on topic, anything by Linda Ronstadt. Particularly Desperado ("Hey. That's a nice song Don. Mind if I sing it?")

Anything she sang written by Karla Bonoff.
Someone to lay down beside me.

Bonnie Raitt singing "I Can't Make You Love Me", written by Penn State OG Mike Reid.

Bonnie singing "Angel from Montgomery", written by John Prine. RIP

Arlo Guthrie singing Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans".

Any song by Boston.

Judy Collins singing "Both Sides Now." Karen Carpenter singing "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" and "Top of the World." Leslie Gore singing "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows." Peggie Lee with "Pass Me By." Some British Invasion, but not Beetles. "Red Rubber Ball" heads the list.

Lots of Folk. The Kingston Trio with "MTA" and "Zombie Jamborie." Limeliters with "Drill Ye Tarriers Drill," "John Henry" and "Wake Up, Dunia" Brothers Four (?) with "Reuben James." Almost any version of "Wabash Cannonball."

But fewer songs than short instrumental pieces--themes from "The Wild Wild West" "The Iron Horse" "Hawaii 5-O" and "A Team" might head the list. "Rat Patrol" makes the list, too. Also "Dallas" and "Wiseguy" though I rarely watched either. Something died when TV went to songs for opening credits.

But I'll still start long trips driving in the dark with the "Wiseguy" theme on repeat.

And I see I forgot the Fifth Dimension. "Up Up and Away" of course. But I used "Age of Aquarius" as a tune for something at work, and was a little shocked that my younger colleagues hadn't heard of it.

Classical Gas by Mason Williams
No Sugar Tonight by The Guess Who

Last year I discovered Little Steven's Underground Garage on Sirius XM and am really digging it. It is one of the most eclectic stations I have listened to. It does feature a lot of "cool" rock and roll from the 1960s, but has music from the 1940s up thru today. A good 90% of the songs are ones I don't know, but am happy to listen to. It's my guilty pleasure while driving.
