Let's see … which entitilement to address first? OK – It's so sad that his "culture" is forcing him to do things. Very tragic that his desire for the specific approbation of others isn't voluntary. And he has no ability to opt out of participating in it. OPPRESSION! Then we pile on that it is impossible to earn money at something you like doing. I was completely oblivious to the fact that I don't like what I do. Or that I have never had a choice to find a job doing what I want when I want. Society is so evil for not forcing other people to give me their money on my terms. EEEVVVIIILLL! |

Actually, this is just a rip off of an NYT article from several years ago which had a title of something like the "joy of being mediocre." In it discussed the same points, that basically hobbies are for relaxation. In this era of over sharing and media hype, hobbies maybe in decline simply because folks (in their own minds) can't be good enough. And frankly I understand it, I belong to a very lose gaming group, of which there are several GM who have won many HMGS awards. I get how one might look at these magnificent games and go "why bother". |
