The retreats of the previous late winter had left the city poorly defended by one German infantry regiment. 2 Tank Army, the southernmost army on the Central Front, comprised 3, 9, 16 and 19 Tank Corps. 3Tk and 9Tk Corps converged on SMOLENSK with 3 to the north and 9 to the south of the River, marked on the board by the rail line…"
