Do you have one or more full-size classic cars in your collection?

Perris0707 Supporting Member of TMP18 Jan 2026 1:25 p.m. PST

Not anymore. Marriage and kids cost me my 1969 Camaro and 1969 Javelin. But I would say that it was worth it. Most days anyway. 😁

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART18 Jan 2026 1:38 p.m. PST

By the time I get rid of a car, it's an antique anyway.

+1 Captain Beefheart

advocate18 Jan 2026 1:54 p.m. PST

No, and wouldn't if I won the lottery.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP18 Jan 2026 2:21 p.m. PST

If I won the lottery I do have a mental list of cars I'd like to own for about 6 months and then trade in for the next one…

TimePortal18 Jan 2026 2:24 p.m. PST

No. In high school I drove a 1969 Ford Gran Torino. White with red pin stripes. 4 barrel.
In college, the family car was an olive drab Shelby Cobra Convertible with a Mustang body. It is in a car museum in Alabama now.

No, got better things to do with my money, such as buy miniatures and food and pay the mortgage!

My Toyota 86 is a classic – best car I've ever owned.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP18 Jan 2026 3:03 p.m. PST

This is for gamers, right?

I think that the classic car gig is more of a tech bro thing – we need to spend our cash on things like grandkids, electricity, food, etc – plus the tractor takes up most of the room in the barn!

"Are you a classic car collector?"

No, Jay Leno beats me to them. Every. Time.

;-)

A car is a means to get from here to there. If they do that well and don't have issues, then for me that is all that matters. Don't care what they are.

glengarry618 Jan 2026 3:50 p.m. PST

I ride the bus.

No. Way outside of what I can afford.

Fascinating. With a couple of exceptions (Shelby Cobra!), this thread is indifferent to cars- even hostile.

It's rather too low a number of responses to be sure, but does this indicate a radical change away from the car culture that was a hallmark of the C20th?

nudspinespittle Supporting Member of TMP19 Jan 2026 5:02 a.m. PST

Yes. I have a 1974 Dodge Challenger Rallye I purchased in 1984 (I'm the second owner), in my garage. I also have a 2005 Dodge Magnum R/T I purchased 10 years ago as a project to fix up/hot rod out. Unfortunately that was put on hold, my wife became terminally ill with cancer but managed to hang in there for almost 7 years. I'm just now getting started again. The car should be done in March and I can't wait!

huron72519 Jan 2026 5:44 a.m. PST

I would love to own a manual transmission hot rod someday. Probably not in the picture though unless I won the lottery that I never play.

mckrok Supporting Member of TMP19 Jan 2026 5:56 a.m. PST

Does my wife's classic count (1986 Mercedes SL560)? My name is on the title, too.

Mot any more.

My daughter would tell her friends the her parent didn't own a car built this century. 1993 Jeep Wrangler and 1999 Camaro Z28, that is until three years ago when the Camaro died (cost twice as much to repair as it was worth) and was donated to DAV. The Jeep had one last issue (two shops refused to work on any vehicles made before 2000) and it went to the local public radio station.

Two new cars added in the last 3 years.

"once I win Lotto…"

Spent the summer of '82 as a Mechanics Helper at the Harrah Auto Collection. About as close as I'll get to owning any classics

Royston Papworth19 Jan 2026 10:24 a.m. PST

Ok, so depends on what you class as a classic.

I would say I have a couple of ‘unusual' cars.

A S197 Mustang, which while common in the States is unusual over here.

The other is a MG ZT260, it's a 21 year old car from a defunct manufacturer, but very rare…

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP19 Jan 2026 10:28 a.m. PST

I've always wanted to own a '57 two door Chevrolet. it was the best of the "fins" cars. Ain't gonna happen as I have little money and zero mechanical skills. Oh, and of course, James Bond's killer Aston-Martin.

kodiakblair19 Jan 2026 10:31 a.m. PST

No

Phillius19 Jan 2026 10:48 a.m. PST

Does a 95 Silverado count? If so yes.

And our sons 72 Chevelle is in our garage while he is in Australia.
And yes, if I won the lottery the first purchase would be a C2 Corvette.

Do you see the Chevrolet connect there? While my current drive is a Jeep.

Also, I became aware of Climate Change in August 1972, so yes, I am rather conflicted. A bit like finding the perfect rule set really.

What "car culture" was the hallmark of the 20th Century?

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP19 Jan 2026 11:22 a.m. PST

If I had the space and money, I would buy a classic Mini Car. A Messerschmitt Kabinenroller would be delightful.

Yeah, I'm getting one of those for a month or so after that lottery win

Personal logo KimRYoung Supporting Member of TMP19 Jan 2026 2:41 p.m. PST

I did have a 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible at one time, but upkeep cost and time maintaining it became to much of a burden.

Yeah, I'm getting one of those for a month or so after that lottery win

That's basically how those things work.

Exotic cars (classic cars, being a subset) are about 8% of cars. But "lottery" exotic car purchases are only about 1.4% of lottery purchase. Despite the cool myth about people blowing the whole thing and ending up worse off finaically than they started (this does happen), the overwhelming majority of people are pretty responsible with lottery winnings.

Of those who buy exotic cars, there is a thing dealers (silently) call "regret buyers", of which lottery exotic car buyers are a subset. People who like the idea of having an exotic car, but burn out on the reality of it quickly and return them with low miles.

Again, there aren't a lot of people who do that, but a lot of those who do, don't actually like it.

How does this have anything to do with miniature Wargames?

Personal logo Saginaw Supporting Member of TMP19 Jan 2026 10:05 p.m. PST

No, but I've driven two of them.

I learned how to drive on a 1970 Ford Torino GT, which my brother bought just after he came back from Vietnam. After two accidents in relatively quick succession, he gave it to our Mom who drove it for about 11 years. The next car was a four-door 1975 Chevrolet Caprice Classic, which became my first car. It was white with a deep red interior and a matching faux leather top. I called it "The White Chariot", loved driving it, and pretty much drove it until it was time for another car.

I enjoy looking at classic cars, but I don't think I would feel comfortable owning and driving one. Too many opportunities out there for something happening to it.

jefritrout20 Jan 2026 7:18 a.m. PST

Nope. I drove a 71 Beetle for a bit. My mom had a chance to get a 57 Chevy, but she bought a 59 model instead because it was 2 years newer and had 12000 miles less wear. Granted this was in 1963.

SBminisguy20 Jan 2026 7:54 a.m. PST

If you mean Matchbox classic cars for my gangster-era games, absolutely!

IUsedToBeSomeone20 Jan 2026 8:24 a.m. PST

I used to have a 1976 MGB which was 14 years old when I bought it and 30 when I sold it. But not since then.

DeRuyter20 Jan 2026 9:34 a.m. PST

@Ochoin Not a radical change in car culture, just mini wargamers aren't car collectors!

My Toyota 86 is a classic – best car I've ever owned.

Hell, yeah. We had my mother-in-law's 1997 Toyota Corolla from about 2005 to 2024. We got it with about 32,000 miles and donated it with 249,000 miles and a failed distributor (and possibly other expensive electrical problems). We understand that it is now being used by a charity in San Diego to bring old people to medical and other appointments. We hope it's enjoying the weather.

But other than that, no. We have a new Miata that's our fun car for weekends, and big boring EV sedan for ordinary driving tasks.

1/1 is a bit large for my gaming table, Bill. Anyway, aren't we The Miniatures Page? Surely only Cooper Minis would be acceptable.

95th Division29 Jan 2026 8:48 a.m. PST

I had a '52 Chevy Styleline Deluxe, which I sold and bought a '65 Ford Fairlane Sports Coupe. The Ford was a beautiful car. Now I have 0 classics.
