The German Battalion was initially an Additional Continental Regiment raised in 1776, from German speaking settlers in Maryland and Pennsylvania, authorised by Congress with an idea to attract British employed Hessians to desert the British and fight for the rebellion.
The regiment fought with distinction at the Battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine and Germantown but was afflicted by poor leadership throughout, from senior commanders to field officers, with the regiment mutinying twice, and likely persuading Washington to disband the unit in January 1781.

Hi Chaps, Thank you, the German Battalion were a really interesting unit to research and I'm looking forward to modelling them on the table slightly differently from the rest of my Maryland Continentals, with a few rifle skirmishers and a light infantry capability, but with potential morale issues. Were you able to find any uniform information on the regiment? I have not been able to unearth anything, but your rendition looks good. I might paint my unit with a mix of Blue (MD) and Brown (PA) coats with a few hunting shirts mixed in for good measure. All in all, your research and blog post are very interesting and well done. |
