I attempted to find older threads where this has already been asked about, which I'm sure it has more than once! But I couldn't seem to track them down.

I'm doing 28mm Zulu War and I'll probably end up using the Black Powder rules. I know that they've got their standard base sizing in the main rule book, which I used for AWI. But it would seem that the Zulus might be based a little differently given the larger formations that are not rigid line formations.

I'm thinking 40mm x 40mm squares for British infantry 4 models per base, 50mm x 50mm for British mounted, 2 models per base. And then various rounds for skirmishers and command stands, ranging from 25mm round up to 50mm round.

But the Zulus are what I'm stuck on. I would think that in addition to the main Zulu formations, you'd also want some on individual round skirmish bases for various situations?

Thanks in advance for those who are already gaming this time period!

I use 20 mm bases for individual figs – round for native forces, square for regulars – there are big bases that allow you to drop in 20 mm round bases for moving figs en bloc

If you want the bases to match up for hand to hand (not familiar with Black powder) then use 40mm frontage but 60 or 80mm depth to show larger force.

@Frederick,

Are you talking about sabot bases with the circle cut outs? I did some AWI units like that so I could use the models as both line units and as skirmishers.
