Baconsthorpe Castle is about 5 miles south of Holt. It is free to enter and open dawn to dusk. English Heritage closed it more than two years ago for extensive restoration including the insertion of steel girders into the gatehouse.

It features handgun ports cross-firing the entrance and a square tower with two artillery embrasures. Never completed as a 'proper' castle it became a sheep-sheering station with one tower used to wash fleeces.

Good inspiration for anyone who wants to build a 15th or 16th century castle or defended manor house.
