I couldn't even read this, what with all the pop-up ads that wouldn't go away. BBC had a similar article, but BBC America is now behind a paywall. And not a cheap one either. As someone who once had this as my homepage, before they got greedy and grasping, this has been a blow. I send money each month to the Guardian instead, better value for money. Northumbrian piper queen Kathryn Tickell features a modern repro carnyx on her album, Ensemble Mystical. link |

Thanks, ochoin. It wouldn't take many of those for a young soldier to wonder what he was doing so far from home. Sorry about the pop-ups. Annoying but manageable on my end. |

What we don't know, of course, is whether any recognisable tunes were played. The Romans talked of the cacophony they produced, which indicates just blaring, non-melodic noise. But this could either be just propaganda emphasing the Celts' barbarity or perhaps, the Romans didn't recognise the alien music? When I was a Teen & playing Led Zeppelin in my bedroom, my mother thought it was just a dissonant & jarring din. |
