I couldn't even read this, what with all the pop-up ads that wouldn't go away. BBC had a similar article, but BBC America is now behind a paywall. And not a cheap one either. As someone who once had this as my homepage, before they got greedy and grasping, this has been a blow. I send money each month to the Guardian instead, better value for money.

Thanks, ochoin. It wouldn't take many of those for a young soldier to wonder what he was doing so far from home.

Sorry about the pop-ups. Annoying but manageable on my end.

What we don't know, of course, is whether any recognisable tunes were played.

The Romans talked of the cacophony they produced, which indicates just blaring, non-melodic noise. But this could either be just propaganda emphasing the Celts' barbarity or perhaps, the Romans didn't recognise the alien music?

When I was a Teen & playing Led Zeppelin in my bedroom, my mother thought it was just a dissonant & jarring din.
