Steve Jackson Games published 7 playmats on mousepad, with hexes in the style of the color GEV game map board. These are great for several reasons, but the larger space [no stacking] and the ease of picking up counters on them are significant.

I got them all.

Wondering if someone else makes 2" hexes where 1 Hex=1 Mile, and in a "sci-fi style", and on similar mousepad backing.

Anyone know of any? Picks are at below link if you don't know what I mean.

I have multiples of all the OGRE/GEV mats and love them. Haven't come across anything similar with that size hex.

Deep Cut Studios, or other that does custom printing, I think is the only route for now.

I switched over to 4" hexes so that Ogres would fit in one hex. I use the Kallistra Hexon II terrain tiles. Sorry that's no help for you…

2" and mousepad backing I don't know. But you might get away with GEV on Battletech 1.5" boards. I've been known to blow up the counters and glue them to cardstock to have something a little more compatible with aging eyes and hands.

You might also want to see what's been done with various Borg games with 2.2" hexes. Might be something useful there.

Not mousepad (neoprene), but Cigarbox mats will give you printed hexes from 1 to 4". You can pick the size and I bet if you wanted something custom, they'd do that as well.

I've got a fleece blanket in a tie-dye brown pattern that looks like a blasted waste. It doesn't have hexes but I intend to simply place evenly spaced dots in an off set pattern across it— just simple black dots. The center of each dot would effectively be the center of a hex, without needing to draw a hex pattern out (or even the corners, though a pattern of "Y"s would work for that, if you prefer). Place the unit on a dot, and it's in that "hex." Count dots for range, etc..

I went with Hexxon terrain and 3D scatter terrain.
