On 28 July 1942 Stalin, as People's Commissar of Defence issued his order No. 227 and its famous slogan "Not a step back!" in the face of continued Axis advances. The most significant barriers to any invasion of Russia are the great rivers, the Dniepr, the Don and the Volga. By August 1942 the Axis armies were crossing the Don. At Verkhny Mamon on a loop in the course of the Don, an Italian infantry battalion has established a bridgehead, which the Soviets are determined to eliminate…"
