"This is the AAR for latest Worthing Club game. In the Spring of 1944 the Soviets launched their Dniepr – Carpathian offensive that ultimately led the Germans to believe that the next offensive would also be against Army Group South where they concentrated the bulk of their armour, leaving Army Group Centre vulnerable to Operation Bagration.
The battle for Tarnopol was a small but important part of the Dniepr – Carpathian operations.

Before the war Tarnopol (pop. 35,000) was a town in southeast Poland near the border with the USSR. It was in that part of Poland that was annexed by the Soviets under the terms of the Molotov – Ribbentrop pact after the fall of Poland in 1939. It's particular strategic significance was as a rail hub and by 1944 was on the only remaining rail route available to the Germans east of the Carpathians between Lvov and Odessa. It has the dubious distinction of being the first place to be designated by Adolf Hitler as a Fortress City, to be held at all costs, effectively dooming the garrison…"
