In one of my post I was asking which was the best ratio; a lot of you answered 1:1 would be top and sincerly I agree. Some of you pointed out the problems of the dimensions of the playground. I do agree on this again. So finally I gave some ideas: the proportion would be: 1 km = 570 cm (!!!) I considered that a man – even if elbow to elbow – occupied not the standard 80 cm width but a more realistic (at the end they were marching and fithing and there is the terrein etc. ) 1 m space. The result is as said. I started from here https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgHBkYwMzgTRh4oiBGAZzl15_w2RCWFVkVS30rss3K5SubOFHO2tx4etMJ-Mp6s82IcPElbh_ylEfNdczHrZqv43ac76kIjvSc682JsvjHB3vlU2rvXpmmapaJpvfFoAXnAGZYULv6I-PupFT2BykGLY2EzDl5K29bEedemBZ3FdDQO6VOxwo1KmL0Tkmp5=s16000 more details on my blog link I crossed with a lot of period becase this is a common problem |

In what way then do you consider this to be the 'best' scale ? To me it looks unplayable; barely enough space to deploy more than a few battalion sized units, nowhere near enough for most historical battles. |

"best" is always subjective. I was referring to one of my previus post where some voted for 1:1 ratio and other for 1:10 ratio. The main problem – my opinion – concerning downscaling is the fact that the shape on the playground of a battalion becomes totally unhistorical and senseless. A battalion in the XVIII and XIX centuries were long lines of soldiers, often curving in the total line of attack. Also to have a battalion "represented" by 20 figures with a flag in the middle is more a chess game; having a real battallion (1:1) allows to recreate also the inernal dynamics of a battle. To solve your question I adopted a soliution link link |
