A story about a trip down memory lane, but not just nostalgia, more a challenge to myself to see what I could do with those Airfix models of my youth. Several years, as a modelling project, I set about seeing what I could do with the Airfix models I could remember from my youth. Here's a link to a much longer blog report on the whole project with more pictures: Airfix, nostalgia and modelling madness

Nice work, TP. That Pz II is well done, mate. Barbequed to perfection, in fact. |

What a terrific project and post, stirring wonderful memories too. I still have a small number of Airfix friends unbuilt. It might be time to have a go, though I could never match the level of still on display here. |

Bravo! Fantastic work. Your photography skills are at least at the same level as your modelling, and your writing a cut above both. And I didn't even discover Airfix until I was almost 20. |

What a brilliant posting for anyone of an age to remember West Ham winning the World Cup back in 66. The final painting is just superb but I just loved to see the detail added to each model before colouring. Many are transformed, but nothing compares with the result achieved with the JSIII. That is miraculous for what was a particularly misshapen product. I admit the Airfix Tiger was worse and we all know the story of the mudguards on the German Armoured Car. Like you, I only recently on TMP learnt how I should have assembled the Churchill suspension. Dragon was far easier this year in 1/72. |

Excellent work on all those models, Tactical Painter! The details and painting are amazing. |

The models above are outstanding and a testament to the fine craftsmanship of the OP. I lack the craftmanship gene, so I follow the three-foot rule religiously and still have large numbers of Airfix and Matchbox products in my tank park. |

I keep going back to the JSIII. The end result would be terrific for 1/35. The paintwork and desert patina is superb. You don't have any images of the model enhanced, but before painting do you? |

Superb work! Like almost everyone here (?), I built these as a teenager. Nostalgia indeed! |

Talk about making a silk purse from a sow's ear. What resonates with most of us is that at one time or another we have built these kits, for gaming or just modeling, and know how poor the kits really are. Hats off to you sir. |

Wonderful work with a creative imagination on display. Many memories here. Chris |

Thanks. Unfortunately I wasn't blogging back then and was only posting occasionally in forums so didn't take as many work in progress pictures as I should have, so I'm afraid the answer is no, I don't have any, sorry. |

I think my first British Airfix tank was the Matilda. I did it in Bovington caunter which Airfix used in its guide. Their suggested colours are amazingly wrong. I did write to the museum director but he defended it though he has no sources! Having discovered a British desert Morris truck with its original colours in the Czech Republic, I repainted the model and it scrubs up pretty well. |
