Are the Rules You Wrote Any Good?

25% said: "yes, my rules are excellent"
14% said: "some are good, some not so good"
11% said "I haven't finished writing them yet"
7% [TIE] said "no, my rules are no good" OR "my rules are adequate for club/local use" OR "my rules need more tinkering"

So one in four of us thinks our own rules are excellent? Not that I would take my opinion on my own rules, you understand.

I'm still quivering in terror and shame at the mere thought of the rules I wrote for Trenton.
I'm stunned I wasn't lashed to the back of a dung wagon and flogged from town to town for them.

I can't imagine that any of those 25% are British.

Our rules are at best, somewhat adequate.

And if you want to talk about "somewhat adequate", talk about the England cricket team – though that's still hyperbole.

I am UK based; define excellent it can mean anything. My rules are as yet, as far as I an concrened. They do they intended job very well. The fact that we are still using them every week for the last 16 years is testament to that.
If excellent is a synonym for perfect, I hope not. Hopefully someone will do better but after 16 years I am still waiting; moderen rules have gotten oversimplified and more "gamey" for my taste so no improvement for me.

Perhaps a better question would be are you satisfied with them in their current state, or are youn still "tinkering?"

calling out all sacred cows.. myself included. Writing your own rules permits you to interpret the period to your own views.

I'm both 25% and 11%. Still need to work out vehicle rules (and complete about 30 army lists. Yes, it's a generic sci-fi skirmish game… ;-)

Covers WW2 to about 2010. Beyond that point warfare begins to change dramatically. The Ukraine war is so different that it would take another set of entirely different rules and the battle space is really to big for other than map games. Still some small convectional actions but even then the presence of drones makes it difficult to model in my opinion

Interestingly the rules were written to allow you to create your own army lists, however the incessant demand for army lists indicates we were unique in wanting that functionality form a set of rules.

But you write rules for yourself and it's great if they are of value to similarly minded folk.

Korvessa yes and yes (sort of). Yes they work well for us, we are in the middle of a "long game" and they are working well. There have been minor upgrades over the last 16 years, as our experience and knowledge has increased but the basic mechanisms have been stable throughout. However as rules writers we are always on the look out for worthwhile improvements, No reason for an issue 3 yet, and I may not be around in another 16 years it took for the full full re-issue.

I'd vote 'adequate' for my offerings.

Since I designed in the 1970-90s , I would say some were good and others lacking. Production was definitely weak
