We used to be able too, when Stifling was first introduced. There was even a public listing of who had how many.
I think we should have that ability to know how many this account has.
But I see no need for public listing.

Curious as to why would one want to know? 🤔
Makes no difference to me if I am, or am not. 🙂

My vote, leave it as is.

Curiosity over how offensive my latest post was? 😄

I vote NO.

Potters17 Dec 2025 8:27 a.m. PST

I would be amazed if I had any stifles, cos I am lovely I am! But, yeah, I'd like to know.

14Bore17 Dec 2025 8:34 a.m. PST

Never stifled anyone, don't care if you did it to me.

If memory serves me correctly, the reason the view was taken away was that some members were using their stifle count as a badge of honor and they were attempting to see who could get the most.

If I could just remember who was the winner of that dubious contest.

So if you get 5, you become an ace? 😉

I wondered if the real issue wasn't bragging rights.

For my purposes, it would be adequate to put people in categories, rather than provide the precise number of Stifles. Hence, 0, 1-10, 11-50, and so on.

I just insulted both von Lettow-Vorbek and Mother Theresa in the same post. I just want to see if I offended anyone. 😄
As I recall, the invisibleing of stifles was an Editorial decision, rather than a Poll. 🤷

I am reminded of the town that put a decibel meter (one of those big signs that showed what the decibel level was) on a road to reduce engine noise. Human nature being what it is, it became a competition to see how high a decibel reading you could get. Unintended consequences.

Some of us consider being "Stifled" a badge of honor and shows that somebody is actually reading our comments rather than skimming over them.

kodiakblair18 Dec 2025 6:35 a.m. PST

John the OFM.

I see 4 names here on my 'stifled' list.

Hate to say it but your post regarding von Lettow-Vorbek and Mother Theresa didn't get you on the list 😃

Andrew Walters18 Dec 2025 8:58 a.m. PST

I think everyone except a user should be able to see that user's stifle count.

When you check your own it should always say "1". That way we each thing we're active enough to get noticed but generally liked, and no competition will be possible.

But we should be able to see other people's stifle count as a sort of user review. If many people have stifled a particular person I should probably stifle them, too.

Alternatively, the computer could arbitrarily stifle a few random people for each of us and not give us any control or information about it. That would be fun.

My "Stifle List" goes way back and has many.
However, there are only 2 current members. I see no need to unstifle either one.

Col Durnford Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2025 9:48 a.m. PST

This brings up an interesting question. Who is the biggest ahole on TMP, the one with the most stifles or the one who stifles other people the most?

14Bore18 Dec 2025 12:06 p.m. PST

No idea how one knows even how many stifles one has

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2025 12:45 p.m. PST

That's something we were never told (IIRC).

Personal logo John the OFM Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2025 1:11 p.m. PST

I think, and I may or may not be correct, that when Dear Editor abolished the public display of "who had how many" that he also disabled the code to count them.
But that was a long time ago, in a different land far far away, and besides the Wench is dead. (Hah! You thought I was going to mention galaxies!)

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2025 3:31 p.m. PST

No. Personal gratification is just as bad as competition for them.

Personal logo John the OFM Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2025 4:13 p.m. PST

I never suspected that I was so obnoxious until I saw the listing. 🤷
I never thought that I was in a competition. Of course the Lads at Frothers thought different.
Ironically, many of those lads had high stifle counts. Who knew?
