occurred off the coast of Uruguay, where three Royal Navy cruisers defeated the German "pocket battleship" Admiral Graf Spee. I'd suggest one of the few occasions when 'punching above your weight' can be justifiably claimed. |

I've been to both the wreck of the Graf Spee (which is now entirely submerged apart from a buoy) and the on shore memorial to the battle which has one of Ajax's anchors. One of the rangefinders from Graf Spee is on the dockside in Montevideo, it is huge! |

That battle was a masterclass in subterfuge and gentlemanly behaviour! I feel so much sympathy for all the combatants, especially HMS Exeter, which got badly shot up, and then ended up on the losing side of the Battle of Java Sea and sunk. |
