There are so many. My favorite actor.

Zulu

The Man Who Would Be King
The ultimate "buddy movie".

Sleuth

The Italian Job
"You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"

The Muppet's Christmas Carol
Per this one. He often said it was his favorite role. He said he approached it as if it were The Royal Shakespeare Company. He played Scrooge dead seriously. If I were handing out Oscars that year, he would have won it.

He is also one of the best talk show guests, with the best stories.
I watch any show he is when my YouTube thingie suggests him. 👍

KeepYourPowderDry09 Dec 2025 7:22 a.m. PST

How can you forget The Last Valley? He starts off with a bad German accent then slips into Michael Caine. To reinforce his German-ness he wears the illegitimate love child of a zischagge and a pickelhaube.

A very young Brian Blessed is very shouty, and Omar Sharif the eye candy for the ladies.

Secondhand Lions

Zulu The inspiration for uncounted colonial era wargames.

Educating Rita Though I used Rita's accent for Sam Gamgee when I read Lord of the Rings to my son.

Noises Off Watched this one as a comfort film just last week after swallowing a small dental tool.

I thought about Bewitched, but let's face it, the real attraction there is Nicole Kidman.

Definitely an All of the Above for me.

Let's remember
Alfie
Funeral in Berlin
Billion Dollar Brain

DeRuyter09 Dec 2025 9:50 a.m. PST

I can't believe no one has added "A Bridge Too Far" and "The Battle of Britain"

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was funny.

Alfie

But I would be shocked if the poll didn't finish with "Zulu" on top!

The Eagle Has Landed for me. But many good ones. One of my favorite actors.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP09 Dec 2025 10:29 a.m. PST

Glad someone finally mention Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Hilarious movie, and a perfect pairing with Steve Martin.

He was also great as Alfred in the three Christian Bales Batman films, particularly The Dark Knight Rises.

TimePortal09 Dec 2025 10:30 a.m. PST

Loved most of his work. Zulu

Sweet Liberty
Caine plays a vain actor who is playing Banastre Tarleton. The actor believes that Tarleton is badly maligned in history and in Alan Alda's book.
Once more, Caine dons the British red coat.

Caine thought his career was over when he no longer was offered parts for the leading man. "Now I play Mature and Wisdom."

That would be a toughie! He's been good in smaller roles as well as starring roles. How to distinguish a Good Michael Caine Movie from A Good Movie That Has Some Michael caine In It?

Plenty of excellent ones already noted above, so I will just add a few not yet plugged:

Without a Clue (superb pastiche of Sherlock Holmes)
The Prestige (smaller role, but key)
Gambit (classic caper film)

Without a clue is great

A Bridge To Far.

A small part for Caine, but a great movie!

Another vote for Second Hand Lions.

Bismarck09 Dec 2025 1:35 p.m. PST

Tough choice to make. Zulu.Eagle has Landed. Second hand Lions
my top picks, but several of those already mentioned rank high
on the list. Has he ever made a bad movie? I don't think so.

And we all forgot Miss Congeniality. Totally out of his usual character, but classic in a comedic role.

rustymusket Supporting Member of TMP09 Dec 2025 2:07 p.m. PST

Anything I can think of has already been named. The movie where he was a spy who wore glasses (such a big deal was made of that) and my wearing glasses did not seem so bad, then.

Ask him. He'll tell you. But he got paid, and he's always been a working actor.
The Swarm
Jaws something or other.

He laughs about them on chat shows.

Yes, he's one of the screen's great raconteurs! I attribute this to his multifarious career and grounding in real life (and the UK). One of the greats! And a genuine God's own cockney. Hail!

Really enjoyed Second Hand Lions but all his roles are great !

Martin Rapier09 Dec 2025 11:30 p.m. PST

Of all of them Get Carter was one of his best. Any film which has Alf Roberts chucked off the top a car park in Gateshead gets a thumbs up from me.

Of the Harry Palmer series, Ipcress File was the best, it had gone off the boil by the Billion Dollar Brain.

Many of his more recent films were good too, I particularly liked Harry Brown.

He did make some really bad ones too!

Personal logo John the OFM Supporting Member of TMP10 Dec 2025 4:42 a.m. PST

I had never heard of Harry Brown, but it looks like it's available streaming. Hope so.
It looks like it's in the Death Wish category, with a few familiar Game of Thrones faces.

As for lousy films, he readily acknowledges them. He described a scene in The Swarm where he was standing under a genuine swarm that was on the roof above him. He noticed that they were defeating on him. "The first reviews were already in."
He also said that nobody knows in advance that it will be a bad movie, but you can tell very early in the shooting that it will.

This being a wargaming site, I can make a bet if a million quatloos that Zulu and The Man Who Would Be King are the early favorites.

Yes, those two are hard to top for a wargamer. Zulu single-handedly created the Colonials gaming genre, I'm convinced!

The Man Who Would be King is my favorite. I thought he was spectacular in the Dark Knight series as Alfred.

+1 for Without a Clue. You could tell the cast were having a lot of fun with it, as well.

Too many good ones to mention, not to mention minor parts in films like Kingsman: The Secret Service. A true actor, unlike most who call themselves an actor.
