As far as WWII in Europe goes, I am mostly interested in Poland and France in 39 and 40, and America in NWE. I've neve had any interest in the Eastern Front, but I have been reading about the Southeastern Front lately. Very interesting. Kampfgrupe composition is all over the place with veteran cadre, untrained conscripts, Luftwaffe ash and trash used as infantry replacements by the thousands, etc. You can put quite an eclectic force on the table like Hungarian infantry, ill equipped SS, and a German police battalion supported by a handful of AT guns and a battery or two of AA. Three StuGs showing up is a big deal. Pretty neat. |

Desperate last ditch ad hoc units scraped together to offer some resistance against overwhelming odds and contrary to all commonsense was surely the "trademark" of the Axis in South Eastern Europe against the Red Army. The more I think about it, I can see the attraction for a wargamer. I have a bunch of various Axis units, stick them together, who can argue? |
