I own the published ACW variant, The Sword and Succession, but it's primarily aimed at skirmishes, raids, etc. I am wondering if anyone uses TSATF for larger engagements, treating every platoon like a regiment? Veteran units would use the British charts, green units and militia would use the Egyptian charts. Boer charts could be used for cavalry. I am running a game next week based on the movie The Horse Soldiers and I will be using The Sword and Succession as it's a big skirmish games but later I want to try using the individually based figures for a small battle, something like New Market. I even have the military institute cadets!

I don't see why you couldn't it that way. It has been used for so many different setting so why not larger size games as well.

Let us know how it works out--I'd like to do some small Civil War battles.

Two Thoughts

1 Use Larry Broms rules – Fast Play for Conventions –
By Battalion, Volley Fire! – Works really nicely

2 – Havent played them but Larry also did a set of Civil War Rules – A Glint of Bayonets for ACW Infantry Actions at a Battalion or Regimental Scale

"800 Fighting Englishmen" is TSATF "Heavy".
Instead of individual figures for infantry, it mounts 4 on a base.
Basic TSATF rules proceed.
The multiple basing need not be used permanently. I base my figures on 3/4" OD washers. You can use magnetic large bases. Or sticky stuff.
We've used that a lot.

This is a variant I'd not heard of before! I'll be interested to hear how things work out, at skirmish level or reconfigured to a large-scale battle using modified rules.

People play WWII with it, so you can certainly make it work. Larry also wrote "A Glint of Bayonets." It is designed around 20 figure units that represent a regiment of 500 men.

We've used "A Glint of Bayonets" very successfully in a number of games.

We played Alma using TSATF, my only comment is that morale is not as much a factor as I think it should be.

I think that is because the author was going for more of a Hollywood movie vibe than a "serious" wargame experience.
