The internet recommends Vallejo Pale Sand or Iraqi Sand for the color of the bamboo shaft. What acrylic hobby paint color do you recommend?

I use Ceramcoat Bamboo.

It's the perfect color

Yeah, that Delta Ceramcoat Bamboo is one of my go-to paints for natural wood -- and it takes a brown ink wash superbly!

I agree on the Ceramcoat Plaid, but I opted out of suing it due to the fact I've used that as my basing highlight for years! Using it for both the base and figures just looked wrong. As I just started a Sudan project I had to fish around for an alternative. I ended up settling for Citadel's "Zandri Dust", mostly because it is available in a rattle can and a bottle. Being able to spray the entire mini with khaki has proven to be a time saver.
