Earlier this year, I'd started a post-Waterloo ("The French Victory") campaign. We'd fought two rear guard actions with the Prussians & a bigger encounter with the Anglo-Hanoverians, heading towards the Belgium coast. Now for something bigger: a French invasion of Germany. I've started with the following scenario outline:

Encounter at Bruckmühl (Southern Germany, July 1815-ish)

This will be a fast, decisive meeting engagement scenario with fog, fractured command, and a race for the high ground.

Strategic Situation

After a hard retreat from the Upper Rhine, the Prussians are withdrawing through Upper Bavaria toward the Isar. French advance elements, moving faster than expected, are trying to pounce on their rear guard. Both sides are converging on the small market town of Bruckmühl, where the Mangfall River meets a key north–south road.

OOBs, terrain & fleshing out the scenario to work on.

A fascinating "what if", the essence of why we all wargame. Please keep us posted mate.

Thank you. Down the track, the Austrians will get a look in & I don't see why the glacial Russians might not try a reverse-Borodino.

There's always the possibility of French reverses & a repeat of the Campaign of 1814.

To be fair, they were outnumbered & the French had elements of the Guard arriving in reserve.

Very intriguing…. thanks for sharing that

Interesting! So where did Wellington take his army to?

Bob, England. They acquitted themselves well after the French Advance Guard caught up with them near Antwerp & had sufficient time to evacuate.

Shades of Dunkirk!

This doesn't mean they won't return.

Shades of MacArthur!

I imagined they would take ship to the coast of Prussia, bypassing a return to England and operate against the Corsican ogre from there.
Fun thinking about the possibilities!

This is great. Would love to see the scenarios when you write them up. No more hundred days. Maybe 200 days.

Bob, if you lived nearby, I would involve you in a heart beat.

OC – I can't claim any great originality. Other people have done this. Ditto my scenarios. I could send them to you….PM me with your email details if you want.

I'm planning Bruckmuhl now – working on forces from the collection.

"Balance" is important but doesn't necessarily mean 2 mirror armies. For example, in the earlier Rear Guard actions, the Prussians, on the defensive & occupying BUAs, were substantially smaller a force than the French.

In Bruckmuhl, I'm trying to balance things depending upon arrival time, original deployments & the victory objectives.

Troop quality also comes into it. BTW one reason I'm doing this campaign is that it allows me to use my Imperial Guard forces – within reason. For this battle, a brigade of the Young Guard with supporting OG Foot artillery will be in reserve.

"The Fall and Rise of Napoleon". Love it. I might have to break out my Napoleon in Europe or War and Peace game and push some units around. 😊
