I'd say write the rules realistically, so other deloyments don't work very well. So long as formed infantry have no problem with repelling cavalry from their front, cavalry will go on the flanks. Might be worth while to be sure the rules don't permit/encourage tighter infantry-cavalry coordination than could be pulled off historically. |

I seem to recall that there are 17th Century manuals covering army deployments. How far these were just theoretical I couldn't say. |
