I found these seven different Dragons, and one Wyvern (only two legs) available at Wal-Mart, for $1.67 USD each! Ignore their low quality paint job from the factory; instead, look carefully at their sculpts. A simple primer coating, followed by appropriate painting, washing, dry-brushing, and they should turn out quite nice, for a ridiculously affordable price. Each sells for $1.67 USD at Wal-Mart. Remember that these will look much better with even a basic paint job. Prime gray/white/black, then paint appropriately for the Dragon type you want to make them, wash and dry brush, base as desired. At these prices, They are incredibly affordable! Cheers! Wyvern -- two legs only:
Dragon #1:
Dragon #2:
Dragon #3, 2-Headed:
Dragon #4, Rampant:
Dragon #5 (Green/Blue?):
Dragon #6 (Black -- check out the head horns?):
Dragon #7 (Generic -- make any type desired/needed?):

LOL, John the OFM! I really want to get the one with big horns, to rotate them down, alongside its jaws. I think it would make an excellent AD&D Black Dragon. Dragons #2 and #4 look like they would make excellent AD&D Red Dragons, based on the head sculpts, but I already have three Red's. I could use another AD&D Blue Dragon, though. Hello, Dragon #1! The idea of converting these, is really piquing my interest. I really think they could look good with a better paint job. Cheers! |

Those ARE excellent old school D&D dragon sculpts. I just wish I didn't have to patronize Walmart to buy them. But I'll ponder my proclivities. |

Gary Gygax used plastic toy figures for some of his 1e AD&D monsters. This is like stepping back to the mid-1970's, joining Gary in his fantasy choices. Truth be told, though, today, we have his 1e AD&D artwork to judge by. By combining these models with modern painting tools and techniques, we can really make them look decent by today's modeling/painting standards. I love making conversions on inexpensive toys such as these. Projects like these really give me a warm fuzzy connection with Gary, making me feel like a comrade of his, even though I never met him. It is 50+ years later, now, and I was just a kid when he worked on this stuff. I never could have collaborated with Gary -- I grew up in a town around four hours away from Lake Geneva. Still, any connection I can make with Gary's legacy, is fun for me. Cheers! |
