… just prompted by them.

I took Alaskan this past weekend to San Jose (NWSL Championship and a bonus Sharks match). Their boarding groups are lettered instead of numbered. And they use an uplifting phonetic alphabet for them. "Now boarding Group B. B, as in beautiful." I am working on the crumudgeonly phonetic alphabet as a counter, but …

Another thread on the board was talking about radio comms problems. So I reached into my Documents folder and pulled up the definitive English phonetic alphabet:

a aisle
b bdellium
c czar
d Djibouti
e eyrie
f you shall not pass
g gnome
h honor
i unus
j jalapeno
k potassium
l quinquaginta
m mnemonic
n ieung
o opossum
p ptomaine
q queue
r the shortest distance between the center and the edge of a circle
s szechuan
t tsar
u uillean
v quinque
w wrench
x abcissa
y ordinate
z applicate

That works in English, which, thanks to the French and their bloody Viking mercenaries a thousand-odd years ago, has the worst sound-to-symbol mapping of any alphabetical language (although Thai is close, and that was clearly intentional, an alphabet created by royal command).

Good drivel! As in your list has no earthly resemblance to reality!

English is 50% Latin, 50% Old Norse, and 7% other stuff.

I have decided to change way I spell my first name to Yrrhighaupn.

Yrrh as in myrrh; igh as in fight, au as in laugh; pn as in pneumatic.
