The enemy of my enemy doesn't always turn out to be my friend.

Re "The enemy of my enemy doesn't always turn out to be my friend." True, but he could have had the U.S. not supported the French to hold onto their Vietnam colony.

I've often wondered why we supported the French. 🤷
I have read that Churchill was paranoid about losing Empires, so he helped the French initially.
So many "what ifs" there.
55,000 American lives lost. Millions of Vietnamese civilians. All to appease the French and Churchill.

To both comments above, I'm not sure if it's true, maybe somwone can verify or challenge, but I remember reading that Ho came to the US government in the early 50s looking for support, but we rebuffed him in favor of the French. Might we have had a friend there, another Asian tiger, like Taiwan or Japan or South Korea?

Okay, I checked after I posted, Japan is not officially a tiger, it's Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.
