The 64th Foot fought a long war during the American War of Independence being one of the first regiments to deploy to Boston Massachusetts in 1774 as tensions in the city rose, and were responsible for perhaps the first shedding of blood in that long war with a bayonet wound inflicted on a Salem resident in February 1775 during an abortive raid on a rebel arms cache.
The regiment would avoid the blood letting suffered by the British garrison in the frontal assault at Bunker Hill, being left behind as a guard unit in Boston, but would go on to see action in the New York and Philadelphia campaigns of 1776 – 1778 before deploying to the south later in 1779, taking part in the siege and capture of Charleston and in the last major action of the war at Eutaw Springs in 1781.
