The Gary Gygax Memorial was conceived back around 2010. The deluxe reprint books of the 1e AD&D core rule books from that era, sent donations to a fund to make the memorial real. That failed, for many years. Within the past few years, a person who had donated $150 USDk to the memorial fund, had his money returned to him. Things looked pretty bad, for many a year. Then, they launched a KS for it, recently.

They asked for $150 USDk, and they received $213.5 USDk in pledges. They state they hope to have it completed next Spring, 2026! Time to get busy building -- I hope. This project has been fraught with issues, for many a year.

The city of Lake Geneva approved a public space for the proposed memorial; they have the money; now they need to build it. I hope they do. Cheers!

Is this the level that includes the statue of Gary at the table? (Frankly, I thought this was kinda cheesy, but the people gonna want what they want.)

Good luck to them! Interesting memorial. My first thought was a humongous concete D20.

Wasn't it Dave Arneson who really invented D&D?

Bill, let it go. He's a symbol, anyway. The graveyards are full of the people who "really" invented this or that. We honor the ones who made it a going proposition--widely known and usually commercially viable, which is why we don't celebrate Bjarni Herjólfsson Day or honor Ebenezer Kinnersley's invention of electric light.

D&D was both Dave and Gary (and a few others). It was like a peanut butter cup, you can't have it without the peanut butter and the chocolate. They are fine on their own, but you put them together and magic happens.

People debate to this day, but honestly it was the amalgamation of all the contributors that made it happen. Without Gary it would be a forgotten game entirely. Without Dave you wouldn't have the core concepts of role play on top of a table top miniatures set of rules.
