You could use the trading rules from classic "Traveller", perhaps with a few twists. The protagonists have an aging, run-down 200 ton Merchant (for each transit between worlds, roll 3+ on 2d6 to avoid some sort of mechanical breakdown). The typical run is picking up cargo at one sort of world and delivering it to another that needs it more (e.g. picking up foodstuffs on an agricultural world and delivering them to an industrial one, for profit). The standard "Traveller" rules give a chance for space encounters with pirates, customs officers, etc., but you could also have a chance (maybe 1 in 6) for some sort of planetside encounter on the pickup and/or on the delivery. Some pickups/deliveries might be inherently more likely to run into trouble (drugs, weapons, etc.). |

Thats a very good idea – I did briefly think about Traveller – but now I will definitely consider it. Thanks for the recommendations. |
