Trapper John McIntyre for me.

Hunnicutt. Trapper was a dirtbag who cheated on his wife repeatedly. No better than Burns. Hawkeye at least never lied to anyone, or presented himself as someone he was not.
Hunnicutt served as a moral center, while also being funnier (loved the mysterious practical joker episode— a perfect use of the character).

That's a real tough one – Trapper and Hawkeye were such obvious buddies with similar "interests".

Hunnicutt was so different in many ways from Hawkeye that it made for a slightly more abrasive but still deep friendship.

It's like picking between liver and fish – can I have both?

Hunnicutt all the way. A funnier, kinder, far more developed character.

I think a lot has to do with the writing and tonal direction the show took with the departure of Blake and Trapper and the arrival of Potter and Hunnicutt. Breaking away from Altman's film version saved the show. The overly broad comedy, the hedonism, and the focus on critiquing the Vietnam War was unsustainable.

Try to imagine Trapper in the later seasons. Hawkeye and Margaret both had growth and change. Even Klinger and Radar grew up. Trapper was too much of a one-note character.

I make it now seven "poll suggestions" for one aspect or another of this program. Was there a triggering incident? Has someone died, or is there a revival in the offing?
