One of the games hosted last month at the Devon Wargames Group was a tank v tank set-to among the hedgerows using the ruleset Achtung Panzer! from Warlord Games.

As a veteran WWII wargamer the tank-skirmish game epitomised by this ruleset and 'What a Tanker' by the Lardies has not really appealed to me, seemingly a diversion from the more likely combined arms scenario that typified a lot of WWII tank combat, particularly in the close terrain of NW Europe in the later stages of WWII.

However I take the view that minds are like parachutes, always working at their best when open, and so was quite happy to sit down to a wonderfully bedecked table combined with some equally attractive models and give the rules a go and gain an impression of the likely attractions for these style of games, much in vogue at the moment along with skirmish games in general.

If you would like to see more of the game and my impressions of the rules then just follow the link to the club blog.

Great minis/terrain and a very useful review – we have been toying with What a Tanker as well as using the Rapid Fire rules which do allow good combined arms (like our last game, where my 25 pdrs landed a barrage that took out our opponent's Panzer IV that was blocking the advance of our doughty Scottish Light Infantry) – these look like a great set to try out vs What A Tanker

That is a great looking game. Both the layout and minis are extremely well done.

Nice review, JJ, and I agree with Fred ad Pete's comments on the models and the terrain. Thanks for posting it. I also prefer "all arms" games, but I can see the attraction of these games, especially for club nights.
