while watching this Mark Felton video: YouTube link I noticed something that looked strange to me. When firing the mortars at about 11:30, it looked like they had to smack the top of the round while it was in th etube to get in tto fall in and fire. Seems dangerous. |

That's not my interpretation. It looks to me like he is just confirming that the round is in the tube, and maybe giving it a little push for some extra energy when it hits the firing pin. |

Yes, they seem to be shoving the round in, but not actually hitting the top of it. Need to get your hand out of the way quickly! |

There was a translated version of the German drill produced by the British Army in early 1945 that includes the following line - "No.2 places the round into the barrel, vanes downwards, and when the guide band is below the muzzle, forces the bomb down; he then draws his hands clear of the barrel". The wording is underlined from 'when' to 'muzzle' in the typescript. Gary |
