while watching this Mark Felton video: YouTube link

I noticed something that looked strange to me. When firing the mortars at about 11:30, it looked like they had to smack the top of the round while it was in th etube to get in tto fall in and fire. Seems dangerous.

That's not my interpretation. It looks to me like he is just confirming that the round is in the tube, and maybe giving it a little push for some extra energy when it hits the firing pin.

Yes, they seem to be shoving the round in, but not actually hitting the top of it. Need to get your hand out of the way quickly!

There was a translated version of the German drill produced by the British Army in early 1945 that includes the following line -

"No.2 places the round into the barrel, vanes downwards, and when the guide band is below the muzzle, forces the bomb down; he then draws his hands clear of the barrel".

The wording is underlined from 'when' to 'muzzle' in the typescript.
