"German Embassies in 1945" Topic

Here's another obscure question. What happened to the various embassies of the Third Reich in neutral countries around the World after that regime crumbled in 1945? Did the staff just pack up and go back to Germany? Did they claim asylum? Or did they carry on to look after German citizens' interests even though there was no government per se? Any information out there?

No idea about that, but I do know that, in Ireland, De Valera went to the German Embassy to sign the condolence book after Hitler's death. Truly.

Briefly, they were ordered home, sealed up the embassies and handed them back to their host nations. Hilariously the Japanese arrested the German ambassador in Tokyo for 'cowardice'.

Interesting story I read in a book. When the Japanese ministry left Germany right before VE day, they took the last German sub out. Only a few days out Germany surrendered and all subs were ordered to come to the surface and surrender. There was concern about what the Japanese would do, so the commander took their weapons but asked them if they wanted to surrender with them. They chose to commit suicide which the commander allowed.

I heard the same story about Japanese officers in a German sub transporting uranium for use in the Japanese atomic bomb program. VE day came while at sea and the German sub commander got an order to head to the nearest allied port to surrender. then the Japanese committed suicide. I think they were also carrying plans for the Me 262 and V2 Rockets. Now I wonder if either of these stories are true.

How about this… The Japanese take over control of the Nazi sub with its uranium, planning to use it as a giant dirty bomb for a vengeance attack on New York. Matt Damon (under the command of George Clooney) has only 10 hours to find the sub and parachute aboard while it is briefly on the surface for recharging, in an attempt to foil the dastardly Nippon plot. Tom Cruise, commander of the U-boat, decides to work from the inside with Damon against the Japanese in order to try and save his captive German crew (all crusty and noble knights of the sea, Das Boot style) from dying as collateral damage in this insane kamikaze mission. Oh no, a once in a century Atlantic storm is also brewing…

I'd watch it!

The movie would be better with Soviet destroyer chasing uranium for Soviet A-bomb or -if primary objective is impossible- helping kamikadze style attack at USA.
