I understand the German MG08 as well as the similar British .303 Vickers was able to do indirect fire, like artillery. On the other hand, I don't think I've ever read an account of somebody being caught in indirect fire from the Vickers, nor have I ever seen any rules that allow this to happen. Still, since you plan to use the Maxims as artillery, you might want to look into this a bit. Grelber |

Over the Top. (The Command Decision WWI rules) had a rule allowing for MG barrages. I think it was a British only rule, but old age may be ago play here… |

They can be a poor man's artillery by establishing a beaten zone via indirect fire. You can certainly call them artillery for the game, or you can use them as shooters and increase their range. |

"Artillery" in HotT is artillery renaissance-style: direct fire only, with range about equal to cavalry charge distance. So heavy MG, in a VSF context, makes perfect sense for a HotT order of battle. I'm glad to see the paint conversion of the Airfix WW1 Germans into FPW troops – that was something I thought of doing way back in the day (along with Foreign Legion troops, with some knife-work to their kepis, as French)… |

When I was working at a museum in the UK we were listenning to interviews with old soldiers in the First Wold War. Apparently HMG were used in indirect fire during barrages. Somewhat curiously they were sited in corrugated iron enclosures. Report was the gunners went deaf! |
