Bill, modern web browsers are beginning to require websites to use SSL, or they won't allow users to log into them. Case in point: Opera Browser.

The current version of Opera incorporates an ad blocker. I would like to use it, but it will not allow me to log into TMP.

Will you be installing SSL on your web server in the near future? I believe that the absence of SSL on TMP will eventually cut off your members' access to TMP. Just an FYI. Cheers!

I use both Firefox and Duck Duck Go

No problems.

No issues in Edge (yes, I know…)

This site will not load on my Windows 11 desktop system with Chrome, but does with edge. Its the cert problem for me also.

On the other hand, I have no problems with Chrome, neither on my Chromebook nor my Windows 11 PC. It also works on Safari on my iPhone, although I never post from my iPhone.

I am highly reluctant to waste money on security TMP does not require, which would mean less money for the staff editors to pay their bills.

However, I may be forced to do so. frown

TMP doesn't need SSL, until it does. It exists for a reason. There's no telling what might happen if some Russian hacker decides to extort you. If you think security is expensive, try not having security.

I can get in and function with Safari, but I have to click through the warnings when I do advanced things like click on topics or post.

A single domain cert is like $10 USD

How about a Go Fund Me?

I've been unable to log in on Chrome recently after years of no problems. Now I'm forced to use Edge if I want to visit TMP.

Extort how? We process no financial transactions on the website.

I have to go through the warnings perhaps 1 in 5 visits via Safari. It's irritating and occasionally I just don't bother and go elsewhere.

I have no opinion on what should be done – I'm just sharing my experience.

The only thing a Russian hacker might be interested in here is posting unauthorized ads for nesting dolls and balalaikas)))
But with current US postal rates, that would be a completely pointless endeavor.

I've seen it as cheap as $7 USD a year. I see it as an issue that will cause the site to simply die a slow death as new users will just turn away rather than deal with the hassle. I offer to pay the SSL tab for five years for the site at that rate if you will get one. PM me, Bill if you want to take me up on it.

Nesting dolls, each with a different Napoleonic uniform – I could go for that.

A car is only $500. USD

You don't have to pay for registration, insurance, gas, someplace to store it when not in use, parking where go, repairs.

For those who thought "you can't get a car for $500. USD", you absolutely can. Probably cheaper.

Of course, your hoopty insurancge, gas, oil (because it probably burns it heavy), and repairs go through the roof.

Then again, instead of the $500 USD car, you could get service contracts to do all that stuff for you.

-----

Industry standard white glove service for TLS is about $15 USDK/year. Over the last two decades (TLS has been around for three, but you had to do all the work yourself for the first few), the price has risen by about 2.5 times the rate of inflation.

If you don't want to pay $15 USD/year, you have to find the rest in sweat and you can pay your less-than-one-large-pizza-delivered cost. There are tons of options in between.

$15 USDK is not the ceiling, it is a reasonable low-ball.

The reason the cost keeps increasing is that the frequency of major maintenance incidents keeps increasing (up to about 5.5 per year).

If you've ever been dependent on transportation to get to work, and it went down to repairs for several days, you get why (1) quick response maintenance is expensive, and (2) why you get charged so much for it.
