Really nice battle report. And your ww1 armies are so big! I am struggling with playing GWSH, because i have too few troops. But your mat is to wild and it gives a restless view (right term in english?). Simple green would be better IMO. |

Hi Decebalus, Glad you enjoyed the battle report. I don't care for simple green for a mat. The real world is never simple green. There should be a variation of color. I do have lots of different mats, but I needed to put two together to cover the 8' table. However, you are right, my current mat(s) are "wild" and I'm not happy with the color saturation. I correct that in the future. Cheers! Eric |

Nice report Eric. I played GWSH2 once many years ago. IIRC I needed lots of markers to record which units (companies?) in a formation had moved and which hadn't, which affected firing. Is this correct, and how do you handle it? |

If you scroll through this AAR, a fairly typical GWSH game, you get a sense of our use of markers. I hasten to add that then flame markers are purely aesthetic (for the camera). They are unnecessary for game play. link Ngā mihi Robin |

Hi Shardik, I just posted a topic about markers on the GreatWarSpearHead GroupsIO page. I could send you the email as it has photos showing the markers I've used during the game. The small blast markers do show suppression. The large ones just look cool when I do an artillery indirect fire template. Contact me at EricBu2025@gmail DOT com and I'll send you the email with the photos and explanation of what I do. Eric |

Hi Shardik, Markers are very helpful. Here is a photo from the Battle of Sari Bair. It shows Ottoman troops counter-attacking the New Zealanders on Chunuk Bair:
All of the markers are from Litko. The explosion markers represent the centre of the artillery templates for the Naval Gunfire Support, which was provided by the Royal Navy offshore, and from a land-based howitzer artillery regiment. The white skulls on red star-burst markers indicate suppressed stands. White skull markers lying flat on the table represent stands that have performed a combat move. Red skull markers lying flat on the table represent stands that have performed a full move and are not eligible to fire. You can see the whole battle played out on this page: link Robert |

Super report, Eric. A lot of effort went into setting up and running this game. Really appreciate the time taken to provide photos and the write-up. Thank you! Robert |

For anyone who is not so familiar with the historical outcome of the Battle of Mons, here is the battlemap of the sector that Eric played out from the German official history of the battle. Holger and I published an English translation of the official history:
The German divisions managed to cross the Condé Canal in two places (as per the solid black lines on the map) and advance towards the BEF second line of hasty defences. Robert |
