It has been a while since I built a big pre-dreadnought so when a friend asked if I could build a cruiser to go with the model of the USS Kearsarge I had built for him a while back I couldn't resist the temptation. The Atlanta was an unusual-looking ship with a strong VSF vibe so I got right to work.

After roughing in the hull (and a lot of messy sanding) it began to look like a ship

So I got started on the main armament and some superstructure link

Then I got to work on the curiously-shapoed sponsons for the secondary guns link

Of course the whole thing needs rivets link

Nice work! You've given me a couple ideas for a project I have been thinking on, for a few months.

Wow. Fantastic. What will the overall length be?

AntonRyzbak20 Oct 2025 8:13 p.m. PST

79th PA, about 22", a proper scale model would be around 56" long, there are a lot of compromises here

oh man, this would look great in an All Quiet on the Martian Front game. I'm going to borrow the plan, see what I can come up with(sans sails)

Steady work on the Atlanta has resulted in completion of the sub assemblies.

Final assembly and rigging, now just some minor touch-ups and she will be ready to head out to sea
