I started in Harper's Ferry then ended at Dunker Church. The PC game, War of Rights, is mostly set during this campaign so that inspired this short trip to see the highlights.

If nothing else, I logged a lot of good pics of buck and rail fencing for modelers and terrain makers.

It's a great place to visit.

Visited it on a Sunday quite a few years ago….me and my buddies were pretty much alone…one of the most serene battlefield visits I've ever had. Wonderful place.

Much less frequented by tourists than Gettysburg. One of my ancestors was killed nearby at South Mountain and is buried with his comrades in the Soldier's Cemetery in Sharpsburg near the battlefield. It is a special place and quite well preserved. The first time I visited the Smithsonian was excavating four bodies of Union soldiers that had been discovered. They are still finding bones from time to time according to the ranger that I talked to.

Antietam is maybe my number one to visit as far as Civil War battlefields go. One reason is because Gettysburg is the obvious Mecca of the historical battlefields, everyone goes there.

But it has this feel to it that is profoundly different from Gettysburg and other battlefields.

I don't know why, but at Antietam my inner senses somehow connect more with the violence and lingering memories.

Obviously Gettysburg is hugely powerful as well. But Antietam as I said has something about it that hits me differently.

Did you go over South Mountain? I did that once, Harper's Ferry, South Mountain and then Sharpsburg. South Mountain was a surprise, I hadn't planned the drive, just followed 2 lane roads in a general direction and found myself in front of the strangest monument consisting of a wall with an arch. Turns out it is the monument to fallen war correspondents.
