So, several months ago I posted over in the 18th Century historical forums that Wargames Atlantic was releasing their first ever AWI plastics, and that I was looking forward to having a new choice for AWI plastics beyond the Perry Miniatures products.

That post was promptly deleted and a mod. explained to me that we are not allowed to "promote" a new product in the general forums, and that it is left up to the company itself to announce its own product lines and mini. ranges.

Perhaps I simply not getting the nuances of this. But it seems to me that as I write this there are no fewer than a dozen or more posts on this particular Fantasy forum just from a quick glance that are both announcements of new Fantasy products as well as Fantasy product reviews.

In fact, seemingly doing the EXACT same thing I did in my Wargames Atlantic post.

I am genuinely not trying to give TMP or the mods a hard time. I truly do not get this.

Can someone explain to me in, I don't know "4 year old language" what constitutes "promoting" a new product vs. simply "announcing" that it's coming out. And also, how a "review" of a product fits into this.

I have been a member of TMP for over nearly two decades, I do not endeavor to abuse the rules or make light of them in any way. This particular situation genuinely has me at a loss.

I presume that you are referring to this section from the (rather lenghty) TMP FAQ:

Can I announce my new wargaming product on the forum?

No – please see the News of the Hobby FAQ section.

I'm a fan. Can I promote a new release from my favorite hobby company?

Please don't. If we allow that, it incentivizes non-advertisers to get their fans to post on our forum and get unpaid advertising. Of course, you can still post a review or a game report.

Cannot comment on behalf of editors, but I would assume that:

1.) There is no real difference of nuance between "announcement" and "promotion" (that is, all announcements of upcoming releases are effectively considered as promotion).

2.) Product review should involve
a.) actually buying an already released product
b.) taking a good look at it
c.) writing your opinion about it (acknowledging possible bias would be appreciated)

3.) Editorial team does not have time to check through every single post, so the rules may not always be ideally enforced.

4.) The fantasy products review board has so few new topics (I can count six from this year) that it might not be the best reference regarding present policy.

It violates the free advertising rule, or something like that. That said, it's like speeding. Sometimes you get caught, sometimes you don't.
