Someone mentioned "Hillbilly" or "Applachian" SF in (I think) the recent SF novel poll. I remembered an old series, but not enough about it. Now, of course, I can't find the comment. Anyhoo, consider in this context one Henry Kuttner and the Hogben family--mutant somethings who find life simpler in places where no one cares or notices that Grandpa--who is still alive and kicking--remembers Roger Bacon. I don't think there was a collection, but there were a number of short stories. One is "Exit the Professor" in The Best of Henry Kuttner. |

Yeah, polls and their comment are quite ephemeral and wash away. Manly Wade Wellman is probably still the reigning king of Appalachian SF/F link The Hunger Games is dystopian Appalachia. |

Hmm. Not to me, 79th. Once you've got good public schools and a Class 5 machine shop--and you're the highest tech level in the 17th Century--you can stay Appalachian if you insist, but they pull your Hillbilly permit. Anyway, I gave up when Flint swapped authors between Cannon Law and Papal Stakes and all the characters got dumber and less interesting smack in the middle of the story. But if we all liked the same books, B&N would only need to stock about 300 titles. Only read a bit of Wellman years ago. Probably time to take a serious look. And I should certainly read Joyleg. I do a fair bit of Davidson. Thanks to all! |

The 1632 series came to a crashing halt for me when it actually started publishing fan fiction. One of the succeeding books in the series had a 30 page discussion on which branch of Lutheran… ummm… doctrine would be established in West Virginia. Had they (he) stopped with the first book, it would have been great. 👍 But I can't fault a guy for making money. I actually bought 3 or 4 of them. So he got my $. USD To quote Dr Johnson, "None but an ass, Sir, writes for anything but money." He doesn't need my approval. 😄 £$ |
