I'm working on terrain that can be used for Malaysia, Burma, Guadalcanal, etc. Japanese Infantry is on order also. I think most people will consider that Banzai attacks represent a poor strategy and contributed heavily to Japanese losses in various situations. If I'm wargaming various WWII Pacific scenarios, and if playing the part of the Japanese commander, first thing I would do is NOT use Banzai attacks even if that's what happened historically. I just wondered if the American or British player would think that "Unfair" because it's not historical? |

Well, it is a game. As long as the rules you're using don't specify that Japanese must make Banzai attacks, there's no reason that they should have to. Just my opinion. You could certainly add a rule that would force them to Banzai in certain circumstances. |

Banzai attacks work great if your dice are hot and your opponents are cold. Otherwise historical results usually apply. |

The internet suggests many Banzai attacks were an alternative to surrender in many cases. Were they a common tactic in "normal" combat? |

As Extra Crispy says, what's referred to as Banzai attacks appears to cover a range of actions from poor tactics through to deliberate suicide attacks. Personally I think it would be unfair to insist a player deliberately uses bad tactics, but you could perhaps insert something into the victory conditions. Maybe something like losing fewer VPs for soldiers killed vs withdrew, and losing substantially more VP for any soldiers or units that surrender. This might then encourage the Japanese player to use the tactic in the 'right' circumstances. |
